The following are options for all of the Steinbeck books listed below:

East of Eden Tortilla Flats Grapes of Wrath **Of Mice and Men Canary Row

(**The highest possible score if these books are chosen is a 92%)

(Extra credit points (up to 10 pts.) will be given for East of Eden and The Grapes of Wrath

C Level: Basic Understanding OPTION #1 = 77% C

1. Create a thoughtfully written multiple-choice test for your book.

There must be 30 questions- 10 from the first 1/3 10 from the middle 1/3 10 from the final 1/3

2. There will also be one final essay question on the test- a question that requires analysis, comparison, or "deeper" literary insights.

* List page #'s of each section on the test

* All questions should have 4 logical choices

* Questions should relate not only to comprehension, but at least 5 should relate to literary terms, the theme, and "deeper" insights into the novel (put a * by these question on the test)

* The test can be typed or very neatly hand written

* An answer key should be attached to the end of the test- if the test is written on the computer, just print an extra copy and circle/mark the correct answers. The "expected answer" of the essay questions must also be included in the answer key.

OPTION #2= 87% B

1. The same as above PLUS:

A timeline of events from the book that includes at least 15 significant events in the order they occur. Months, years, etc., should be given if available. Adding small, symbolic illustrations expected.

OPTION #3= 97% A

1. 1 and 2.: The same as above PLUS:

2. Internet research of the novel. Using valid websites, make the following information, printing out the homepage of each site. Make sure that the address is clearly visible on each.

A. John Steinbeck biographical information

B. Amazon.com and Barnesandnoble.com critic's reviews of the novel you read.

C. The best 3 search result sights- ones with study questions, summaries, projects, etc. about your novel.

* These websites should be "uniquely" yours. Do not use the same websites as others in the class.

OPTION #3 ALTERNATE CHOICE (Small Group) =97% A

1. Complete options 1 and 2 as described previously.

2. With one or two other members of this class who also read the same book- you may prepare and oral presentation. In this presentation you will give:

a. John Steinbeck biographical information

b. A visual aid of the novel

i. A lafge poster that is made to look like a movie advertisement with cast members listed and movie critics' review

ii. A well-rehearsed, appropriate video depicting a favorite scene (true to the novel with no added "jokes." If there is anything inappropriate in the video, no member of the group will receive credit for the book report. If you have to ask whether something is appropriate- it's not.)



Your final grade on this assignment will be one listed at the option you choose IF each step is done thoroughly, clearly showing your effort. Because of time spent, this will be a test (or triple) grade.
