Unit 10: The Moon

Instructions: Below are the activities you can choose from to earn points for this unit. Start with the C activities. These will help you learn the basics of the unit. Activities in bold are required for every student. After you have enough points in the C section, move on to section B and then A for more challenging activities. Here's how to get the grade you want: 

F: 0 - 85 C points

D: 86 – 99 C Points

C: 100 – 110 C Points

B: 110 C Points and 5-15 B Points

A: 110 C Points, 15 B Points, and 5-15 A Points. 

When you are finished with an activity, you must sit down and discuss what you've learned with Mrs. Ard. You may not turn in more than two activities on the last day of the unit. 

C Activities

Take Cornell notes on the entire unit. - 10  
Watch In the Shadow of the Moon on April 8, 10, and 11 and answer the questions about the video. 1 20  
Watch Apollo 13 on April 14 and answer the questions about the movie. - 25  
Do the “Fishing for the Moon” activity with rest of the class on April 15. 1 15  
Do the Modeling Eclipses activity with rest of the class on April 16. 1 10  
Read “Marching to the Beat of the Tides” and answer the questions on the worksheet. (You will learn about how some ocean animals depend on the tides for survival.) 0.25 5  
Read “Using Eclipses to Study Solar Wind” and answer the questions on the worksheet. (You will learn about how eclipses allow scientists to see and study the solar wind.) 0.25 5  
Read “Can Water Fall Up?” and answer the questions on the worksheet. (You will learn about how the gravity from the moon creates the tides.) 0.5 10  
Read “Eclipses” and answer the questions on the worksheet. (You will learn about how solar and lunar eclipses occur.) 0.5 10  
Read “Apollo 11 Lands on the Moon” and make a timeline of what happened during the Apollo 11 mission. Be sure to include at least 10 events from the article. Your score depends on how many events you put on your timeline. 1 5-15  
Read pages J24-J34 in the hardcover Astronomy book, then answer questions #1-5 on J34. Read pages J39-J44 and answer questions #1-4 on J44. 1 20  
Read “Goodbye to the Moon” and answer the questions on the worksheet. (You will read a short story about a boy who lives on the moon.) 1 20  
Do the “Moon Watch” activity at home. This activity takes a full week to do, so start right away! 1 20  
Do the “Gravity and Tides” activity to learn more about what causes the tides. (You will look at when the tide rises and goes down and look for patterns.) 1 20  
 

B Activities 

Description # of Periods Points Score
Go to http://www.ard.ucutips.org and click on “How the Moon was formed.” Read the information and create a poster explaining the four different theories in your own words. Draw a picture of each formation. 1 5-20  
Use the “Designing a Moon Base” worksheet to design a base for people to live on the moon. You will draw a picture of your moon base. Your score will depend on how thorough and neat your design is. - 5-20  
Use google.com to do some research on the “Geology of the Moon.” Write about what you’ve learned from your research. Make sure that you write it in your own words and that you understand what you’re writing. The amount of points you get depends on how good your research is. - 5-20  
 

A Activities 

Description # of Periods Points Score
Do some research on another moon in the Solar System. The best website to visit for this is http://www.nineplanets.org/. When you are done researching, make a poster or power point about the moon. The amount of neatness and detail in your poster/power point will determine your score. - 5-20  
Make a model of the Moon using a balloon from Mrs. Ard and a permanent marker. You can look at pictures of the moon on the internet or use Mrs. Ard’s poster of the moon. Label several of the features with their names. The amount of neatness and detail in your model will determine your score. - 5-20  
Go to my website (http://www.ard.ucutips.org) and click on “Moon Myths.” Pick one myth or a few different myths that people have about the moon, and write about them. If you can, explain how we know these myths are false. Make sure it is in your own words. You score depends on how much you write. - 5-20
